I was also getting the same error at (v1.488.996.0) the i solved it by downloading the full game from this website. Now you can fix it by downloading the full game from here and solved it.
It actually occurs due to some missing files.

if your using repack version then download the utorrent link by teamkong's site v1.488.996.0 full game and from torrent select the place your u have installed the game it will start to check the files and download all the missing files that's what i did and 17GB is missing.
bro, after following your solution, the error "Error! The selected directory does not have the required files to patch! Please check the original files and filenames in the selected directory!" solved, but when it reaches 100% after patching it still rolls back to the previous version.

Apparently the problem is if you are using any of the repacks(DODI or Fitgirl, etc) and use selective download to save bandwidth by excluding other optional language files, this error occurs. The only way to fix this is to download and install all the language and other optional files like 4K videos, etc, and then try to update, or just download the No-Install version of the game so don't have to worry about any of this issues at the cost of bandwidth.
